A little 'Religious History' and 'Religious Fervour'

The Aztecs are reported to have murdered an estimated 20,000 victims each year to appease their gods. Religious human sacrifice was also carried out in ancient Phoenicia, Gaul, Tibet, Africa (the Ashanti) and Borneo. The Mayans and Incas also regularly sacrificed humans to their gods, the Incas executing as many as 200 children at once during major ceremonies.

In Alexandria in the year 415, Catholic monks beat the great female scientist and head of the Alexandria Library, Hypatia, to death because they considered her scientific work heretical.

In 1066 in al-Andalus (Spain) there was a massacre of Jews in the southern city of Granada due to resentment by Muslims, inspired by preachers claiming that it was “un-Islamic" for Muslims to serve under non-Muslims. (The Rough Guide History of Islam - Justin Wintle)

In 1095 when Pope Urban II launched the first Crusade to take the Holy Land from the Muslims, the German Crusaders decided to first "kill the infidels among us" and slaughtered thousands of German Jews on the way to the Holy Land. The same thing happened to Jews in Prague, massacred by other Christian Crusaders.

1099 The crusaders forced their way into Jerusalem on the 15th of July. For the next two days there ensued a continuous massacre by them of the inhabitants of Jerusalem, both Muslims and Jews. The carnage is preserved for posterity by many eyewitness accounts. Given below is one taken from Gesta Francorum (The Deeds of the Franks):

"The defenders fled along the walls and through the city, and our men pursued them killing and cutting them down as far as Solomon's Temple, where there was such a massacre that our men were wading ankle deep in blood ... Then the crusaders rushed around the whole city, seizing gold and silver, horses and mules, and looting the housing that were full of costly things. Then, rejoicing and weeping from excess of happiness, they all came to worship and give thanks at the sepulchre of our saviour Jesus. Next morning, they went cautiously up the temple roof and attacked the Saracens, both men and women [who had taken refuge there], cutting off their heads with drawn swords ... Our leaders then gave orders that all the Saracen corpses should be thrown outside the city because of the stench, for almost the whole city was full of dead bodies ... such a slaughter of pagans had never been seen or heard of, for they were burned in pyres like pyramids, and none save God alone knows how many they were"

 In 1208 Pope Innocent III decreed that a Catholic sect, known as the Albigenses, should be destroyed, all murdered, because they held heretical views such as the idea that Jesus was only an angel.

In the 14th century tens of thousands of Jews were killed by Christians as they thought (incorrectly) that the Jews where the cause of  the Black Death (bubonic plague).

In the 1500s when the Spanish invaded the Americas they brought the Inquisition with them. Demanding "instant" conversion to Catholicism from all the native inhabitants, resisters and backsliders were naturally common. And the “Inquisition?then killed them.

Thousands of Protestants fled France to avoid persecution and some of them ended up in what is now St. Augustine, Florida. In 1565 Catholic Spaniards discovered one such colony and killed almost every single person there.

On August 24, 1572, in France, the Catholics murdered thousands of Protestants in a single bloody day. It came to be known as the St. Bartholomew Day massacre.

In the 17th century the Church of England tried to eliminate the Puritans, using torture and sometimes hanging to achieve their ends.

Up until the 1800s the Hindus in India sacrificed a male child every Friday evening for the goddess Kali. Other Kali followers killed an estimated 2 million people over 300 years.

In the mid-1800s a Buddhist king in Burma ordered 500 people to be sacrificed to "sanctify" the new city walls of Mandalay.

 In 1915 Christian Armenians and Turkish Muslims waged war on each other leaving an estimated 3 million dead.

Beginning in 1955 in the Sudan, Muslims and Christians waged a "holy" war lasting seventeen years and killing a half million people. In 1983 the same war flared up again, this time with the final result of one million dead in 24 years and the violence continues until today.

In 1980 at Moradabad, India, a riot broke out between Muslims and Hindus because the former believed the latter had intentionally driven a pig to walk over Muslim holy ground, 200 died.

1982 - In the case of Ariel Sharon's admitting the Christian Phalange to the Sabra-Shatila camp in 1982 where 2,000 or more Palestinian women, children and old men were butchered in cold blood. The international outcry was modest and resulted in no penalty or constraint on Israel's ability to kill.

1995 - The massacre of approximately 8,000 Muslim men and boys, and the torture, rape, and killing of many women and children, occurred from July 12 through July 18, 1995 in and near the UN declared "safe area" of Srebrenica. The massacre was carried out after the commander of the UNPROFOR (United Nations Protection Force), General Bertrand Janvier, refused to carry out UNPROFOR's mandate to defend the Safe Area and handed it over to Serbian army General Ratko Mladic.

On January 13, 1999 in Ahmedabad, India, Hindu mobs attacked and set fire to two Christian chapels in an ongoing religious struggle.

 Thousands have died in Iraq as Muslim Jihadists struggle to resists the implementation of democracy.

Indonesia has had three bombings killing and maiming hundreds since 2002.

REMEMBER JOAN OF ARC...  arguably nothing more an hallucinogenic teenager who had the temerity to insist that 'the church' did not own god and she wished to deal direct. Such a dangerous idea they killed her for it.
